Introductory Vocal Anatomy and Physiology

Thyroarytenoid Muscles – paired abductor and adductor muscles that open and close the glottis (pull the vocal folds together and apart); also relax and shorten the vocal ligament, creating lower pitches.
Cricothyroid Muscle – causes the thyroid cartilage to tip forward when contracted, tensing and elongating the vocal folds, creating higher pitches.
