There is a Green Hill Far Away
This evocative arrangement portrays Christ''s triumph over the cross, pairing both tender and exultant moods: The piece opens serenely as unison women''s voices describe the distant green hill, accompanied by gently flowing triplet arpeggios in the piano. A stark, solemn lone note sits in the alto line at the declaration that He "hung and suffered there." Eight measures of TTBB writing build and give way to a triumphant burst of women''s voices in three-part harmony, depicting the text, "He only could unlock the gate of heav''n and let us in." The piece concludes as it began, with flowing, lyrical piano lines accompanying unison women''s voices, as they tenderly sing, "Dearly, dearly has He loved, and we must love Him, too."
